for example, the new btrfs filesystem in DSM 6.0 is only supported on the x15+ models. I'm fairly new to Synology so I can't speak to their support lifespan, but aside from pretty meagre warranty (2 years for the DS415+), they phase out new features on their NAS's pretty quickly. The Atom can handle basic transcoding (720p, low-bitrate 1080p). It's definitely worth sticking to an Intel-processor-based NAS, because you'll have better software compatibility AFAIK up until recently Plex didn't support ARM-based NAS's at all, and even now the ARM CPUs don't allow for any transcoding. The DS415+ doesn't officially support RAM upgrades, but the RAM is replaceable if you take it apart.
I put 6GB of RAM in mine, but I've never seen it use above 25% of that. I run Sonarr, Transmission, Nabnzbd, Couchpotato, Headphones, PMS, and a bunch of other stuff on my DS1515+, which has the same processor as the DS415+. The DS415+ can definitely handle most of your server tasks it doesn't have an HDMI out so obviously it can't act as your media player, but can definitely handle being a Plex Media Server, as long as you're not doing much transcoding. but this would be more time and management overhead (something I'd like to reduce). Any recommendations for best value 4 bay NAS? Would the DS414 be it?īuild my own with mini-ITX case, Ubuntu Server etc. If this isn't the right way to go then I was thinking of two other possible alternatives: How long do Synology support their devices for? I was initially attracted to the DS414 but from reading, the ARM CPU and limited RAM is not up to torrenting, sickrage and so on. My setup is getting quite old now and I'm finding my USB drives are failing somewhat regularly (I guess heat/ventilation is an issue) so I have been looking at various Synology devices as a replacement for the server (then I would eventually replace the NUC for something else to run Kodi). I use it for running XBMC/Kodi and also for sickrage, couchpotato, torrenting, plex (no transcoding), NFS/Samba and a few other random things. I currently have an Intel NUC that I have connected to some external USB drives.
